April 2015 was an inspiring month for me to bravely take a six month sabbatical, which I had been wishing for a long time and leave without any worries on a journey much desired!
Having lived in the UK for 23 years, working really hard, especially since 12 years where I have been working much harder; life had become stagnant and was at a stand still. The courageous step forward was much needed.
I have always dreamt of road trips around the world, well as that is a little far fetched, I decided on as much around India as possible. Although orIginally from India, the opportunity to see our own motherland fully was a rarity, hence the decision. My younger daughter was on her long holiday before she joined university, so I knew I had good company. She is a girl of spice when it comes to travelling, mother and daughter have shiny stars in our eyes the minute we hear the word ‘travel!’
We set off to Nepal for a week from London, it was just before the disastrous earthquake; well that was by flight of course. After a spectacular week there, we then flew to Mumbai and from there to Goa. Some of our friends met us there, they had driven down from Bangalore.
We had the most memorable week in Goa, spending my birthday there was a bonus. Yeah a year older but wiser and more experienced too. I knew I would be lining every experience with a flavour and propensity of travel.
The drive back from Goa to Bangalore was the stepping stone of our future, successful road trips.
After a few weeks my older daughter arrived from London, the next day we took off on random to coorg. The drive was not bad but the city was infested with locust like insects. We had reached there very late in the night and there was no place to stay. Wherever we went, it was full, to top that we had to combat with the plague of locusts which were hiving on everything.
We drove non stop to Mysore, checked into a nice hotel and finally had our much needed rest.
As we were already there, the next day we thought we would go around the city as it had been a long time since we had visited Mysore. It was amazing – the palace, the temple and the food. We went to this old and very famous Mylari Hotel. One of the most delicious dosas! Wow finger licking good.
While we were eating we had the sudden brilliant idea of travelling to Ooty.
We drove to ooty against all odds. The rain was horrendous and then the fog, with zero visibility. Somehow we reached ooty before the kitchen closed in the hotel and were able to get a meal, although nothing to write home about.
We had initially planned to stay for 2 nights but decided to cut short to one night as our interest was diverted to a beach. We drove to Calicut the next day, it was supposed to be 6 hours but due to road conditions, it took 10 hours!
To be continued …
